Michindoh Road
Scholar Programs

Road Scholar
is the name for programs developed and offered by Elderhostel, Inc., the not-for-profit world leader in lifelong learning and educational travel since 1975.  The mission of Road Scholar is to empower adults to explore the world’s places, peoples, cultures and ideas, and in so doing to discover more about themselves. A fellowship of learning and the joy of discovery are the hallmarks of the Road Scholar experience.

Road Scholar programs bring together instructors and participants from diverse backgrounds to foster dynamic interaction, engaging discourse and warm camaraderie. In a world that seems to shrink smaller by the day because of technology, we believe that true insight and understanding are still sparked by hands-on experience and open discussions that stimulate the senses, energize the body and challenge the mind.

At Michindoh, we take this mission seriously.  Combining the ideals of Road Scholar with the individualized service and uniquely Christian hospitality offered at Michindoh Conference Center, we strive to offer you the very best in programming, service, and recreation.

The American Revolution, U.S. Constitution, and Early U.S. Presidents

Dig into American history to answer probing questions about our political system and the democratic tradition. Lectures and discussions with local historians provide a scholarly perspective on the issues that motivated the call for revolution and the challenges of framing a constitution. Survey the role of the president in the country’s infancy and balance classroom time with field trips, evening entertainment and performances by local artists.

Highlights

• Explore the influences that led to the American Revolution., consider the evolving interpretation of the Constitution, and examine the early presidents’ effect on the nation’s development.
• Enjoy a visit to the Michindoh Nature Center to get up close and personal with reptiles and amphibians in a fascinating presentation led by a local expert.
• Explore the Will Carleton Poor House, a historical stone building with a unique architectural design and one-time home of one of Hillsdale's most influential authors, Will Carleton.
